Request an Exception to Web Content Policy

If you manage an official UM website and have discovered that elements of your site are not in compliance, you can submit a request for an exception.

There are situations when websites are not aligned with the University's master brand strategy. In these scenarios, a request must be submitted that captures the purpose and reasoning behind why the master brand strategy is not being followed.

Some examples of exceptions that might be approved include:

  • A website that represents a partnership between the University and other entities.
  • A website that represents an initiative that crosses multiple University enterprises.
  • A website that contains functionality or design material not fully encapsulated or defined by UM Visual Identity standards.
  • A website that aligns with a specific marketing campaign that has been excepted as an exception.
  • The visual identity standard involved is being challenged, upgraded, or changed.

Areas who receive an exception must submit a supplemental identity guide to the Web and Digital team AFTER their request has been approved. The Web and Digital team will then file and maintain all of the approved supplemental style guides offline.

Approval of an exception does not mean that the non-compliant material becomes part of the master brand; it simply means that under the circumstances specified, the policy temporarily does not apply. Exceptions can be revoked at any time.
